Guide to Smoke Control Maintenance

Smoke Control Maintenance Guide Released by SCA

After nearly three years of dedicated effort, the Smoke Control Association (SCA) has released its long-awaited Guidance on Maintenance of Smoke Control Equipment (Rev 1.0, 2025). This comprehensive guide establishes clear maintenance requirements in line with ANNEX I of BS 9999:2017 and BS 9991:2024, ensuring compliance and best practices across the industry.

Our very own Simon Sheldon, Associate Technical Director at FDS, played a pivotal role in shaping this document, working alongside industry experts to develop a standard that enhances fire safety and system reliability.

Regular and proper maintenance of smoke control systems is critical—not only to meet compliance but to ensure these life-saving systems function when they’re needed most. This new guide provides much-needed clarity for building owners, facilities managers, and contractors responsible for maintaining smoke ventilation systems.
